My mind was still buzzing about what the doctor at the hospital had told me about my blood work. They had run all kinds of tests on me when I came through the emergency room even though it was clear I had shown up because a taxi had hit me outside of a prison. Because I was uncomfortable, I didnât talk much to Paul in the car. When we got out, he brought me directly to a guest suite in his house. It looked like an upscale hotel room.
âI want to talk to you about Ellis.â Paulâs face was stern, and I didnât have the energy to deal with him.
I thought for a moment about how to reply. âIâm tired,â I said, letting my body slump as much as it wanted to. Theatrically, I yawned.
Paul took a look at me, his mouth twisting. âOkay. Iâll have someone bring you some food, and weâll talk tomorrow.â He left the guest suite.
Walking further into the guest suite, I flung myself backward on the bed. What a day. First, Ellis had shown me that he didnât actually care about me. Well, I could have guessed that from the way that he let me get adopted when he was a young man. Second, I had been hit by a taxi after I visited Ellis. I had been too emotional to keep track of the traffic around me. Third, Paul had been the one to walk into the hospital like a knight on a white stallion. But I was not the kind of girl who liked to be saved. I didnât like the high-handed way that he had told the doctor that he would be the one who took me home. Thanks to very strong patient privacy protections, he did not know my secrets. I still had time to think about what everything would mean for my future.
There was a light knock on my door. âIâve brought you some dinner,â I heard a voice say. I said, âCome in.â
A woman wearing an apron bustled into the room. âI kept it light, since I heard you were just in the hospital. Itâs just some chicken soup.â She lightly placed it on a small table in the corner. On the tray, she had put a spoon and some saltines.
My stomach was unhappy smelling the scent of cooked chicken, but I needed to be polite to her. I was a guest, after all. âThank you,â I said. âMy name is Corrine.â
âMy name is Maria,â said the woman. âIf you need me, you press the intercom button marked for the kitchen during normal business hours. Someone should be able to help you.â
âOkay,â I said. I guessed that Maria was the chef or something. Maria left my guest suite.
I went and ate the soup, even though my stomach was rebelling at the idea of eating it. I knew that I needed to escape Paulâs clutches as soon as I could, before he realized everything. But my body was aching and sore, and I didnât want to end up in the hospital again.
